This Privacy Policy explains what information the Sportmeet mobile app (the “App”) collects, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have. It describes how the App works today; if that changes, we will update this page.
1. Who we are
Sportmeet (“Sportmeet”, “we”, “us”) is a sports-social app operated from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Sportmeet is responsible for the personal information described here. For privacy questions or requests, email privacy@sportmeet.io. For general help, email support@sportmeet.io.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Phone number. You sign in with your mobile phone number. We send a one-time code by SMS to verify it. Your phone number is used for sign-in and is not shown on your profile or to other users.
- Profile information. Your display name, and optionally your age, gender, a short bio, the sports you play, your skill level (Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced, where your profile has one), and profile photos. Your profile is visible to other signed-in Sportmeet users (see “How information is shared”).
- Photos. If you add profile photos, the photos you choose are uploaded. The App only accesses the specific photos you select; it does not read your whole photo library.
- Games. When you create or join a game: the sport, place description, date and time, number of players, the players who joined, and, if you choose, the map location of the game.
- Likes, matches and messages. Whether you connect with or pass on another profile, resulting matches, and the messages you send in chats with your matches (including game invitations).
- Blocks and reports. People you block, and reports you send about other users (who you reported, the reason you chose, any details you add, and where it happened — for example a profile or chat).
- Messages to us. If you email us, we keep the email and our replies.
Information from your device
- Location (only if you allow it). If you grant location permission, the App uses your device’s location while the App is open to show your position on the map and how far games are from you. This distance is worked out on your device. We do not store your device location on our servers and we do not show it to other users. If you tap “Use my current location” while creating a game, the coordinates and a place name derived from them are saved as that game’s location and are visible to other users who view the game. You can turn location off at any time in your device settings; the App still works, without distances or your position on the map.
- Technical and security data. Our service providers (see below) automatically process standard technical data needed to run and secure the service — for example your IP address, device and app information, and authentication events. We do not use a separate advertising or analytics SDK in the App.
Information from earlier versions of Sportmeet
If you used an earlier version of Sportmeet, your profile information from that version (for example your name, sports, and profile photos) was carried over to the current App and linked to your phone number. The earlier version’s systems still exist and still hold the information you gave that version, including your phone number, profile details, activity such as friend connections and games, and chat messages. Photos from the earlier version are hosted on Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3) and continue to be shown in the App for people who were carried over. We are keeping the earlier systems for now so we can finish moving people over safely. When you delete your account in the current App, we also remove your data from the earlier systems and from Amazon S3, by hand, within 30 days — see section 7.
3. How we use information
- To create and secure your account and verify your phone number.
- To run the App: show your profile to others, suggest people to play with, create matches, deliver chat messages, and list, map and manage games.
- To show nearby games and distances (location).
- To keep the community safe: blocking, reviewing reports, checking names, bios, game details and messages for clearly prohibited language before they are saved or sent (a basic automated check that cannot catch everything), preventing abuse and fraud, and enforcing our Terms and Community Rules.
- To respond to your questions and requests, and to meet legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it to show you third-party advertising.
4. How information is shared
With other users
- Your profile (name, photos, age, gender, bio, sports and skill level, where provided) is visible to other signed-in Sportmeet users, for example in Discover.
- Your messages are visible to the person in that conversation.
- Games you create or join, including the place, time, and who is playing, are visible to other users who can see the game. Your name and photo may appear on a game’s player list.
- We do not tell a user that you blocked or reported them.
With service providers
We use the following providers to run the App. They process information on our behalf and under their own terms and privacy policies:
| Provider | What it does for Sportmeet |
| Google Firebase / Google Cloud (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage) | Phone-number sign-in and SMS verification; storage of profiles, games, matches, messages, blocks and reports; storage of photos you upload. Our Firebase photo storage is located in the United States. |
| Google reCAPTCHA | Helps prevent automated abuse when a verification code is requested. |
| Google Maps (Android) / Apple Maps (iOS) | Display the map. Map providers may process data such as your IP address and map requests under their own policies. The device’s place-name lookup for a location you choose may also be handled by Apple or Google. |
| Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3) | Hosts profile photos carried over from the earlier version of Sportmeet, and may host other data from earlier systems. |
| Apple App Store / Google Play | Distribute the App. They handle their own account and purchase information; we do not receive your store payment details. |
| Our email provider | Delivers email sent to privacy@sportmeet.io and support@sportmeet.io to our team. |
Because these providers operate globally, your information may be processed in the United States and other countries, which may have different data-protection laws than your own.
For legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information if we believe it is required by law or legal process, or necessary to protect the safety, rights or property of our users, the public, or Sportmeet.
5. Your choices and controls
- Edit your profile. Update or remove your name, bio, age, gender, sports and photos from Profile → Edit Profile.
- Block and report. Use the ••• menu on a person’s profile or in a chat to report or block them. A block stops messages and game invitations in both directions, and stops new likes and matches between you, until you unblock in Profile → Block list. Blocked people are not told.
- Permissions. Location and photo access are optional and can be changed in your device settings.
- Delete your account in the App or by email (see section 7).
- Access and correction. You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or to correct it, by emailing privacy@sportmeet.io. We will respond as required by applicable law.
6. How long we keep information
We keep your account and profile information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove the items listed in section 7. Some information is not removed automatically and is kept until we remove it on request or no longer need it for the purposes above. We may keep information we need to meet legal obligations, to resolve disputes, or to protect safety and prevent abuse — for example reports about users — for as long as needed for those purposes. Earlier-version data is removed after you delete your account, as described in section 7.
7. Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account in the App: Profile → Delete Account. If you no longer have the App, see sportmeet.io/delete-account or email privacy@sportmeet.io. For security, the App may ask you to log out and sign back in with your phone number before deleting if you signed in a while ago.
What is deleted right away when you delete in the App
- Your public profile (name, bio, age, gender, sports and photo references) and your private account record, including the phone number stored with it.
- The photos you uploaded through the current App.
- The messages you sent, and the matches you were part of. If a conversation then has nothing left in it, the conversation is removed.
- Your likes and passes, given and received.
- Blocks you placed, and blocks that others placed on you.
- Your name and place in game rosters. Upcoming games you host are cancelled; upcoming games you joined are left.
- Your sign-in account, which frees your phone number to be used again to create a new account.
What is not deleted right away
- Messages other people sent you. They stay in that person’s own conversation history, without your name or photo. We do not delete other people’s own content.
- Reports you sent or that were sent about you, kept for safety and abuse prevention.
- A minimal deletion record — an internal account identifier and dates, and, if you used the original Sportmeet app, a reference to your earlier-version record so we can find and remove it. Once earlier-version cleanup is finished, only the identifier and dates remain.
- Backups and logs held by our service providers, which clear on their own schedules.
If you used the original Sportmeet app
The original app’s systems (including a database, a chat service and photos on Amazon S3) are separate from the current App and cannot be deleted from inside it. When you delete your account we record what needs removing, and we delete your earlier-version data by hand within 30 days. Until then that earlier-version copy still exists. We do not offer an automatic confirmation; email privacy@sportmeet.io if you would like us to confirm when it is done.
If you ask us by email instead, we may ask for further information to confirm the request comes from you before acting on it. We aim to respond within 30 days and handle requests as required by applicable law.
8. Security
We use reasonable safeguards: connections to our Firebase services are encrypted in transit, and access rules limit who can read or change your data (for example, only you can edit your own profile, and only people in a conversation can read its messages). Photo files are accessed through web links, so anyone who has a link to a photo can open that photo. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the absolute security of your information. Please keep your phone and SMS codes private.
9. Age requirement
Sportmeet is for people aged 18 and over, and the App asks you to confirm you are 18 or older before you sign up. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a person under 18 has created an account, email us at privacy@sportmeet.io and we will take appropriate steps, including deleting the account.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the App or by another appropriate method.
